This is a presentation I did on sympathy in MRS. DALLOWAY at a conference in Ohio–which gave me the chance not only to talk about Virginia Woolf, but to see the home of the Miami Redhawks up close. And you thought Miami was an exclusive Florida creation!

Paper Presentation at Tenth Nordic Conference for English Studies–May 25, 2007
This was a presentation I did on V.S. Naipaul’s A HOUSE FOR MR. BISWAS at a conference in Bergen, Norway. Not shown is the academic who asked me whether or not Naipaul was really “British enough” to be taken seriously as a critic of British imperialism. The mind boggles sometimes…
Humanity in the humanities?
I’ve been meaning to talk about this article for some time, one of the better ones to show up in the Chronicle in a while. Author Keith Wilhite, who teaches at Duke, suggests that the current job search process at the university level leaves a lot to be desired–in fact, that it’s downright inhumane. Outlining […]

…and checking it twice (actually, more times than that). Grading is in full swing, and so updates here won’t be for a bit–but I’ll be past the end of semester grading crunch soon, and then will be back with more frequency. Best of luck to everyone on final exams, projects, papers, and (of course) best […]

Warning: rant ahead. In the first time of the history of this site (okay, so it’s not European length history, but still, it’s the first time) I’ve cross-posted this entry to both sections of my blog, because I think it applies to both academic and non-academic audiences. If you’re not a Brandeis University alum or […]
Continue reading →Two down, one to go…
Just a quick note to say that I’ve gotten past the second stage of the tenure process; my college committee voted to approve my tenure request, which means I have one step remaining: an appearance before the university personnel committee, which obviously has a major say in what happens next. I’m being careful not to […]
Continue reading →Grading is upon us…
…and I’m in the midst of it. I hope to have more to say on the academic side of things soon, once I get my head above water–but in the meantime, hope everyone in the teaching profession is doing well. Time to switch pens again…
